Bears' 'biggest weakness' could worsen with talented LG predicted to bolt for Ravens
The last thing the Chicago Bears need on their plate right now is the threat of losing depth on their offensive line. Unfortunately, that could soon become a reality.
Chicago's line was reduced to ashes on Sunday night in the Bears' 19-13 loss to the Houston Texans. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams took seven sacks and 11 hits, contributing to a second-half meltdown that included a pair of interceptions.
Both the offensive line and the coaching staff took a lot of heat in the aftermath of the loss, as concerns are high that without proper protection, Williams may never be able to fulfill the promise he displayed in earning the number-one draft selection.
In addition to worrying about improving the offensive line in the future, the Bears have to worry about losing the talent they already have.
On Monday, Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department predicted that Bears starting guard Teven Jenkins would sign with the Baltimore Ravens in free agency.
"The Ravens are rolling with Andrew Vorhees and Daniel Faalele as their interior duo right now, but an upgrade could be in the cards next offseason," the authors said.
"Teven Jenkins went from a first-round tackle prospect to a solid starting guard for the Bears. If the Ravens could tempt him to leave the Windy City, it could be a big pickup for their offense."
Easily the most productive guard on the current Bears roster, Jenkins would be a tough loss to absorb, especially if the line remains one of the Bears' biggest issues. The 26-year-old had 25 total points earned in 2023, ranking third among all left guards, per Sports Info Solutions.
Perhaps it's premature to talk extensions, but if the Bears want to avoid a scenario where a playoff contender like the Ravens swoops in on Jenkins' free agency, they could certainly consider offering him a new deal during the season.
