Could Steelers stick with Justin Fields over Russell Wilson? NFL insider weighs in
The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback before the start of the season, but the veteran signal-caller wasn't able to play in Week 1 due to a calf injury, and the expectation is he won't play in Week 2, either.
That has opened the door for Justin Fields to not only start, but to keep the starting job, even after Wilson is healthy enough to play.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Fields is indeed expected to start in Week 2, and if he can "Execute the game plan, take care of the football and let one of the NFL's best defenses perform," he might keep the job.
"If that happens, don't be surprised if (head coach Mike) Tomlin continues to have Fields start, sources say, even if Wilson has recovered from his aggravated calf injury," Rapoport wrote. "It would not necessarily be a benching, but more of a continuation of what is working under center."
As Rapoport notes, Tomlin has a history of riding the hot hand under center, something he did in 2023 when he started Mason Rudolph over Kenny Pickett.
The difference in that situation is the Steelers actually got a long look at Pickett over the course of a season-plus. Wilson has yet to take the field in a regular season game for Pittsburgh.
In Week 1, Fields wasn't terrible, but he wasn't great, either. He completed 17-of-23 passes for 156 yards and added 57 rushing yards on 14 attempts. Fields did not lead the Steelers' offense on a single touchdown drive and struggled with accuracy on some throws. But he did take care of the football and allowed the defense and kicker Chris Boswell to do the rest.
We didn't feel like it was enough to supplant Wilson for the starting job, but perhaps a strong performance on Sunday against the Denver Broncos will be enough to put him over the top.
Even if he struggles, Fields could get the start by default in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers, as Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported during the week that Wilson may not be healthy enough to play next week.
