Arne Slot implored Liverpool’s players to look at themselves after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Callum Hudson-Odoi came off the bench to score the only goal of the game, capping a tactically astute display from Nuno Espirito Santo’s men and giving Forest their first win at Anfield for 55 years.

Liverpool had made an impressive start to life under Slot with three wins out of three prior to the international break.

It meant Saturday’s result came as a jolting reality check — something that the Dutchman was keen for his players to tune into.

“The result frustrates the most and we cannot be happy about how the game went,” he told BBC Sport.

“It was a stop-start game and we hardly created any chances. We only have to look at ourselves. We have to be better. Far too many times we lost the ball around the area, it was not good enough. We have to be better with the ball.

“Our decisions and execution wasn’t good enough. In general, we defended quite well but the two fast players [Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga] and made it difficult. We took a lot of risk and, in the end, it was a very good goal.”

Liverpool are back in action on Tuesday when they commence their UEFA Champions League campaign with a trip to AC Milan.
