MLB investigating Red Sox following Alex Cora's comments
For a day, the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees rivalry appeared to have some intensity to it for the first time in a while.
On Saturday, Yankees starter Gerrit Cole hit Rafael Devers, who historically owns the pitcher, with a pitch in their first meeting. Then, in Devers' next at-bat, Cole intentionally walked him with the bases empty.
The Red Sox got the last laugh, scoring seven runs on Cole and winning the game 7-1.
After the victory, Red Sox manager Alex Cora was unhappy with New York and Cole, saying he believed Devers was intentionally hit. Then, on Sunday, Cora essentially admitted to Brayan Bello trying to hit Aaron Judge as retaliation in the sixth inning on Saturday.
“(The situation) was closed yesterday, like around the sixth inning,” Cora said on Sunday. “So, you know, we had our chance. Didn’t happen, and we have to move on.”
Now, it looks like Boston could be in trouble for those comments.
According to the New York Post's Mark W. Sanchez, Major League Baseball is investigating the Red Sox over this incident.
It's not surprising to hear this is the result, as it's a player safety issue. It's something that the Red Sox shouldn't have done, and if they did, don't admit it, especially after making a big stink about having the biggest stars in the game healthy.
Boston and Cora have been in trouble with the league before, so there could be fines or suspensions doled out.
