Bears offensive coordinator did not mince words regarding lackluster Week 1 performance vs. Titans
There was no bigger anticipated debut than what the Chicago Bears offense would look like leading into last week against the Tennessee Titans.
They were showing off a new offense with rookie Caleb Williams at the helm, a new running back in D’Andre Swift, and two new receivers in Keenan Allen and rookie Rome Odunze.
They all joined a unit with DJ Moore at receiver and Cole Kmet at tight end. Those expectations came crashing down in Week 1 when they only managed 148 total yards as an offense, and they were lucky they still won.
Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron talked about what they can do to get going as a unit in time for Week 2 against a team as great as the Houston Texans.
"I think just in terms of the flow of the game, I think starting with me, stuff we can do a better job of coaching is getting us into a better rhythm," Waldron said. "I think we get in some of those games where we get in a little bit of an up-and-down rhythm throughout a game, some of those personnel pairings that we’re looking to get to didn’t play out the way we were hoping to as far as the course of the game.
“And it’s going to be tough each week to have a perfect distribution of everyone’s reps right there, but it’s something we look at as a staff to how we can do a better job to help our guys, get in that rotation and get those guys out there together more often."
Waldron has also said that he thinks they will figure out their rhythm as an offense, but with the new personnel there was always going to be some growing pains and we saw that in Week 1. He commented on their offensive identity before Week 2 against the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football.
“I think with our group right now, with the amount of newness and moving young players at certain positions, I think it’s something we know what we want to be, what we want to look like, and as we move forward, I think we’ll get closer and closer to that. I expect us to be there sooner rather than later as far as what our identity looks like."
