Broderick Jones addresses benching after Pittsburgh Steelers Week 2 win
The Pittsburgh Steelers made an odd decision in Week 2 when they decided to roll with a rotation at right tackle between 2023 first-round pick Broderick Jones and 2024 first-round pick Troy Fautanu.
But the rotation was short-lived, as Jones got himself benched after singlehandedly wrecking the Steelers' third drive of the game. Jones was flagged for three penalties during the series, with one false start and two holding flags.
Making matters worse, one of the holding penalties negated a beautiful 51-yard strike from quarterback Justin Fields to wide receiver George Pickens that would have set the Steelers up in the red zone. After the three flags, head coach Mike Tomlin had seen enough and sent Jones to the bench.
Following the game, Jones took accountability for his abysmal showing.
“I just wanted to go out there and do the best of my ability every chance I had out there, which I didn't,” Jones said, per Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “A couple stupid calls. Just got to play more clean, be better and just finish.”
"You got it," Tomlin replied when asked if the penalties were what led to Jones getting benched.
It has been a rough year for Jones thus far. After struggling in pass protection during the preseason, Jones had issues in the same area in Week 1, surrendering two pressures and two sacks.
It once looked like the Steelers had their tackle pairing of the future in Jones and Fautanu, but it's safe to say that future is now shaky after what we've seen from the Georgia product in his second year in the NFL.
