Bears place offensive lineman on injured reserve, add receiver in roster shakeup
On Saturday, the Chicago Bears announced several roster moves ahead of their Week 2 road matchup against the Houston Texans, including placing an offensive lineman on injured reserve.
Ryan Bates, who shared snaps at right guard with Nate Davis against the Tennesse Titans in Week 1, has been ruled out for the next four games with a shoulder/elbow injury. Bates is in his first season with the Bears after coming to Chicago in a trade with the Buffalo Bills. He will not be able to play until Week 6 at the earliest when the Bears travel to London to play the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Bates was originally expected to compete for the starting center position but lost out to Coleman Shelton. In Week 1, he played 38 snaps at right guard. Now, Davis will be the full-time starter for the immediate future.
Long-snapper Scott Daly takes Bates’ spot on the active roster. Daly had been on the Bears’ practice squad. With long-snapper Patrick Scales already on IR, Daly fills a need for Chicago.
The Bears have also elevated wide receiver Collin Johnson from the practice squad for Sunday night’s game. Starting wideouts Rome Odunze (MCL) and Keenan Allen (heel) are listed as questionable to play against the Texans.
During the preseason, Johnson caught three passes for 56 yards with two touchdowns against the Texans. He was drafted by Jacksonville in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft and has 29 receptions for 388 yards and one touchdown in his career.
