Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga full card results, schedule for 2024 boxing fight
Mexican superstar Canelo Álvarez has been there and done it during his Hall of Fame career and will be taking part in his 26th world title fight when he climbs the ring steps to take on Puerto Rican power puncher Edgar Berlanga on September 14 in Las Vegas. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast by DAZN PPV and Prime Video.
Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) has the deepest resume in boxing, holding wins over Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto, Gennadiy Golovkin (twice), Daniel Jacobs, Sergey Kovalev and Jaime Munguia to name a few. With that kind of experience under your belt, you’re unlikely to be fazed by a loquacious young challenger even if he does have sixteen first-round knockouts.
"I respect my opponents, but I like to respond when they talk," said Canelo at a Los Angeles press conference. "I’m going to be at my best on September 14 and I’m not gonna have any compassion for him. I’m going to be different. He needs 20 of him to give me any problems.
"I motivate myself because I love what I do. But this type of fight, and these types of fighters who talk to me like that, it motivates me even more. It gets me excited. I’m going to train like never before to win everything on September 14."
MORE: Why is Canelo not undisputed super middleweight champion?
Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) has sent the message that he’s far from intimidated by his opponent’s formidable reputation and that this is his time. However, despite standing his ground during verbal altercations during the press tour, the New York-based challenger is respectful of what his opponent has accomplished.
“I actually like Canelo a lot,” admitted Berlanga. “It’s crazy that I have studied him a lot because he was one of my idols growing up and his style reminded me of me. He’s a puncher, he can take a punch, he likes to fight, he’s smart.
“What he’s done, that’s what I am chasing… legacy. Fighting the best, defending the titles, putting on mega shows, and his resume is elite. You can’t take that away from him and I am working towards that.”
The Sporting News will provide undercard results below and a full report on the main event when it concludes.
