Steve Spurrier saw Jim Harbaugh's destruction of Michigan coming
Steve Spurrier believes Sherrone Moore was left with little to succeed at Michigan and blames championship-winning ex-Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh – who left for the NFL in January and gave Moore no chance to find a JJ McCarthy replacement in the transfer portal – for the team’s current situation.
Funnily enough, Michigan hadn’t played a game yet when Spurrier made these comments.
"That coach (Moore), he doesn't have much of a chance with what (Jim) Harbaugh left him," Spurrier said to Gainesville (Fla.) Sun columnist Pat Dooley on “Another Dooley Noted Podcast back” in June.
"Thirteen from one team drafted, and something like eight on defense, nine on offense, or something like that. So it'll take them a while to get back to a team like they had last year. That's for sure."
Michigan looks as troubled as Steve Spurrier thought they would
Spurrier’s comments re-entered the news cycle after the Wolverines beat Arkansas State at home on September 14. Davis Warren was benched after throwing three interceptions and replaced with Alex Orji, who has thrown seven passes in his career.
With USC coming to town, many see a major fall for Michigan as imminent. Probably because the last Power 4 school the Wolverines played, Texas, beat them 31-12 and planted the Longhorns flag at midfield after the game.
Michigan’s saving grace is that the Minnesota and Washington games after that look winnable. The bad news is that Illinois, Michigan State, and Indiana all look better than advertised.
The worst news of all for fans of Big Blue? Beating Ohio State appears off the table and Oregon similarly looks unstoppable after bouncing back against Oregon State in a big way, bludgeoning the Beavers 49-14 in Corvallis.
Harbaugh didn’t leave Michigan in a position to repeat. He may not have even left them in a position to compete; at least against the top teams in the Big Ten just yet.
