NFL Hall of Famer drops lofty comparisons for Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez
The New England Patriots have started the season off 1-1 through the first two weeks, and a lot of the positive things we've seen from the team have been from the defensive side of the ball.
New England has held their opponents to just 33 points through two weeks, as they've put their offense in good positions to win games.
Second-year cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been one of the team's bright spots on that side of the ball, as he's picked up right where he left off before last year's injury when he won Defensive Rookie of the Month honors in September.
Through two games, he's held Ja'Marr Chase and DK Metcalf, two of the league's best wideouts, to six receptions for 38 yards, according to ESPN's Field Yates and Next Gen Stats.
Before New England's Week 2 loss, ESPN's Mike Reiss spoke to former Patriots cornerback and NFL Hall of Famer Ty Law and asked him about what he sees from Gonzalez.
"The sky is the limit," Law said. "This guy is good. Unfortunately, his season got cut short last year, but he's back and ready to go. I think they're gonna utilize him like they utilized myself, Stephon Gilmore and Darrelle Revis. He has that type of talent where you can match him up on the No. 1 receiver and take him out of the game and hold his own. He's gonna be a high-volume commodity. I know he's gonna play well. I just hope the Patriots lock him up for the long term because he's next. He's got next."
Gonzalez has to wait until the end of his third season before the two sides can negotiate an extension, but so far, he's looked the part and appears deserving of the praise and money.
