National recruiting expert worried Arch Manning can turn Quinn Ewers into Texas’s Spencer Rattler
Mike Farrell (of the Mike Farrell Sports brand) doesn’t think Quinn Ewers should ever come out of a game for Texas unless he’s dead given the threat to his starting role behind him in the Longhorns’ QB room, Arch Manning.
Farrell thinks there’s a chance Manning can turn Ewers into the next Spencer Rattler – who was famously usurped by Caleb Williams at Oklahoma and never got his job back. Rattler would transfer from the Sooners and commit to Shane Beamer’s South Carolina Gamecocks.
“If I’m Ewers I’m not coming out of a game unless I’m dead,” Farrell tweeted on September 14 as Manning replaced Ewers due to a strained abdomen against UTSA. “(You) don’t wanna be Spencer Rattler.”
Manning scored on a 19-yard pass and a scramble in two of his first three players; later going for six on a 75-yard touchdown pass to true freshman WR Ryan Wingo.
Texas’s Arch Manning-Quinn Ewers QB competition is college football’s best
Texas has two future first-round NFL draft pick-worthy talents in their QB room. No other program in the country can make such a claim.
Benching Ewers at this point would be devastating to his NFL stock, but Manning could prove undeniable under center. With the namesake and legacy that everyone wants to see and the second-highest NIL valuation of any college football player, many would see benching him as a sin as well.
There’s no right answer in this situation for Texas. There’s a wrong answer if the QB chosen to lead doesn’t get the job done.
Steve Sarkisian has to answer this question and hope his choice does right by him.
