Is Florida going to fire Billy Napier? The latest after blowout loss to Texas A&M
Per On3’s Nick de la Torre, Florida called a board meeting for the morning of Sunday, September 15 to discuss Billy Napier’s future with the program. The Gators were soundly defeated by Texas A&M by a 33-20 score at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Week 3. The Aggies were up 20-0 at halftime.
If UF’s board meeting doesn’t result in Napier’s immediate dismissal, the leash may be officially deemed short. The Gators get a winnable matchup against Mississippi State in Week 4 that may be Florida’s best chance at winning another game all season. Winning that is just a bandaid with UCF, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Texas, LSU, and Ole Miss making up the rest of the season before a meeting with FSU. The Sunshine Showdown has lost serious luster in 2024.
Napier being fired would leave the interim role for someone currently on staff for the rest of the season. Whichever coach gets promoted would be a sitting duck before a coaching search in the offseason; one that could be open and shut based on recent chatter.
Lane Kiffin would take Florida job if Billy Napier was fired
CBS Sports’ Josh Pate reported that Lane Kiffin would leave Ole Miss to take the Florida job in the event Napier was fired.
"(Kiffin would leave Florida for Ole Miss) In a heartbeat," Pate said during the September 11 edition of Crain & Company. "Lane Kiffin would walk to Florida if they would give him the job. This is not a debate. I've got Ole Miss people in my very close social circle and they fight me on this. They're like 'What can you do at Florida that you can't do at Ole Miss?'"
Pate believes there’s so much more for Kiffin to accomplish in Gainesville than in Oxford, Mississippi.
"Win a national championship, that's what you can do there," Pate prefaced before saying, "And you can consistently be a player there. Contrary to what people believe about Ole Miss, that is still a build multiple years to a peak kind of program. A window program as I call them. They're not sustained year in and year out. They're just not that kind of program. Florida can be."
Florida’s coaching vacancy will have many names linked to it. Kiffin’s is the most intriguing by a country mile.
