Packers center vomited on football during win over Colts, says Matt LaFleur
The Green Bay Packers got a crucial 16-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, in a game that turned out to be full of surprises.
The first surprise was the solid performance of fill-in starter Malik Willis. The Packers were forced to turn to the former third-round pick with Jordan Love unavailable, and he delivered with his first career passing touchdown and his second career win.
But Willis also ended up involved in a play that will be remembered for a very different reason. On a 3rd-and-10 at the 42-yard-line in the second quarter, Willis pulled the ball down and ran out of bounds in an obvious passing situation.
It seemed like an unfathomable mistake in the moment, but according to head coach Matt LaFleur, Willis had a pretty compelling reason not to throw. Center Josh Myers evidently had... well, an incident.
"I asked Malik why he didn't throw the ball on that third down, and he told me that Josh threw up on the ball," LaFleur said. "I was like, 'That's the first time I've ever heard that."
"Shawn (Hochuli) came over to me and said, 'You know, we saw your center throwing up on the ball. Do you want us to take him out next time?' I said, 'Absolutely please do that. Because, I mean, you're talking about a critical situation. And it's third down, and I've never had a throw with vomit on a football, so I don't know. I don't think Malik (appreciated) that."
It feels pretty justified, as it turns out, to not throw a ball covered in vomit. Willis may have had to wash his hands for an extra 20 minutes at halftime, but he avoided becoming the first quarterback (that we know of) to throw a barf-induced interception.
Most of all, Willis helped the Packers avoid an 0-2 start, which would have put them behind the 8-ball in their quest to win an NFC North crown in 2024. He'll have a chance to reassert himself in Week 3, when he takes on his old team, the Tennessee Titans.
Hopefully, for his sake, he doesn't get anymore unpleasant surprises from his center.
