New York Jets lose defensive captain to foot injury vs. Titans
The New York Jets entered their Week 2 game down one starter on defense and they lost another one in the second quarter against the Tennessee Titans.
With boundary cornerback DJ Reed inactive due to knee soreness, veteran linebacker CJ Mosley suffered a foot injury and was eventually carted from the sideline to the locker room. The former All-Pro defender went down on the first offensive snap of the second quarter.
With the Titans facing a 1st-and-10 from their own 16-yard line, the Jets experienced a triple whammy on the ensuing play. Tennessee running back Tony Pollard ripped off a 15-yard gain, drew a horse collar penalty from Jets' safety Chuck Clark and watched Mosley limp off the field with a bad wheel.
After gingerly making his way to the sideline, the Jets' captain was spotted on a cart heading inside. Mosley made three tackles prior to his exit. In the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, the 32-year-old linebacker logged eight solo stops and one assist.
Mosley was initially ruled as questionable to return by the Jets shortly after leaving. In the third quarter, the team downgraded the defensive captain to doubtful for the remainder of the day. The injury was subsequently described as a toe issue. Mosley was seen standing, still in full uniform, on the sideline midway through the third quarter.
Jamien Sherwood has slid into the base defense with Mosley unavailable. Sherwood, a 2021 fifth-round draft choice, saw time as a third linebacker in the opener and totaled three tackles.
Meanwhile, Reed, who popped up on the injury report earlier this week, missed only his third game as a Jet. He played all 17 games in 2022 and missed two games due to a concussion in 2023.
