Cardinals could move on from former MVP after disappointing 2024
After being swept by the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend, the St. Louis Cardinals dropped below the .500 mark for the first time since August 30. They now prepare for their final homestand of 2024.
At 74-75, the Cardinals are seven games back in the National League Wild Card race. With a postseason berth becoming increasingly unlikely, this may be the final homestand for a few familiar faces in St. Louis.
Benjamin Hochman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted that this could be the end for Paul Goldschmidt in a Cardinals uniform.
Goldschmidt won the NL MVP Award in 2022 and helped guide St. Louis to their 12th NL Central title. He was acquired prior to the 2019 season and has been a force in their lineup ever since joining the team.
However, 2024 has been a letdown for the slugger. Now 37 years of age, Goldschmidt is hitting just .246. His recent surge has allowed him to improve his numbers a bit, but it's clear that this season has not been a typical one for the former MVP.
Goldschmidt is of course a free agent at the end of the season, and while there have been rumors of a potential reunion with St. Louis, that may not be the team's best course of action.
The Cardinals have Alec Burleson, Brendan Donovan, Luken Baker, and Jordan Walker who could take over as the team's next first baseman in the event that Goldschmidt departs. They also need to make sure they improve offensively for 2025 if they want to contend again.
Keeping Goldschmidt around may not allow them to do that, but it will be interesting to see how the offseason plays out for the Cardinals and what they decide to do with the former MVP.
